It's probably not the first time you've wondered how long certain foods can really last in the refrigerator or freezer or you've already researched it.
While some argue the pros of food preservation, there's always some who focus on the cons. That's why we'd like to dig a little deeper and shed some light on the topic in today's post.
There are many foods that we buy every day that come with an expiration date and storage instructions, but what about fresh products with no indications?
When we talk about fresh products, we're referring to meat, fish, seafood, cold cuts, fruits, vegetables, some prepared dishes and foods that don't provide clear instructions on how to preserve them, as is the case with garlic, onions and potations. While it is true that refrigerators and appliances now provide great security for preserving food, it's also important to be careful with it.
The first thing we recommend is to have a clear idea of where to place each food, since failure to do so properly could lead to wet, moldy or freezer burned products that may either lose flavor or became unsafe for consumption.
Second, we recommend that you always opt for fresh produce and meals to avoid spending too much or having to throw food away.
And finally, one last tip: when in doubt, don't eat it, especially if there are obvious signs of expiration.
At Da Bruno restaurants, we take great care with the health and quality of our daily foods and make our dishes daily with fresh products.
But when you're at home, the rules change.
That's why we recommend referring to information on the storage life of certain products provided by organization like FoodSafety, Consumer and the European Food Information Council, which we'll talk more about later in this post.
These organizations suggest being careful with food storage so as not to unduly spoil anything or cause digestive problems after eating. While they do state that most foods have an indefinite freezer life, freezer storage should be limited because of its effects on food quality.
Some of the information about refrigerated food might suprisse you, but it never hurts to do some research regarding food safety, even more so now that the weather is hot and it's absolutely necessary to preserve foods well to avoid major problems.
Here's a list with some of the recommended storage times for various foods:
We hope this post has been helpful. As always, we highly suggest buying and consuming food as fresh as possible, just like we do in our restaurants.
