Now that summer is completely underway, we crave fresh, light recipes and one product probably pops into your mind: tomatoes.
If you're a tomato lover, you probably have discovered how difficult it is to find fresh tomatoes at the supermarket that actually taste like tomatoes.
It seems that the tomatoes we buy in stores today have nothing to do with the ones we remember from years ago or the ones home-grown to ensure an explosion of flavor.
So how can you find tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes?
We're here to give you a few tomato selecting tips so you can enjoy the flavor of a great tomato.
We'll begin with three basic--but not always easy--tips: First, be able to distinguish the most suitable varieties for your needs and use them as they should be used in your kitchen.
Then, make sure to respect their growing cycles. The warm, summer season is usually the best time to find quality tomatoes at good prices. As a general rule, tomatoes usually taste like tomatoes when they're bought in season. However, it's also possible to find them off-season with the right selection and judgment.
There are many tasty, flavorful tomatoes like the varieties from Huerta Carabaña, the red tomatoes from Aracena, pink tomatoes from Barbastro in Huesca, or tomatoes from the high mountains.
The delicious "corazón de buey" and R.A.F. pata negra tomatoes also can't be forgotten as well as Santiago black tomatoes.
Of course, there are also plenty of local varieties and tomatoes from traditional seeds that you can find in your town or village at a better price for a higher quantity.
If you live in the city and don't have access to rural markets, it's also possible to find high-quality tomatoes, but everything has its price. You will probably have to spend a little more for quality tomatoes than you would for greenhouse grown varieties.
As an alternative, you might consider growing them yourself. This is a very good option if you have some outside space or can rent an urban garden.
Flavor and satisfaction will make you fall in love with the growing process and also be able to completely control the use of additives or fertilizers, since all you need is land, water, sweat and a little patience.
