Pepequín Orbaneja's boat also overall runner-up in real time.
The Da Bruno Marbella Team won the 35th Copa del Rey MAPFRE championship. The Malaga owner Pepequín Orbaneja's boat, led by the Canary Island native Javier Padrón, marked its victory as of the second day of the race, which closed with a total of ten events in class J/80 and a final day in which the CN Sevilla and the RCM Sotogrande returned to win a double event to add up to a whopping top six total during this intense week. In addition to the 35 Copa del Rey MAPRE in its class, the Andalusian boat was the overall runner-up amongst the real-time sailing classes (X35-J / 80 and Swan 45), a title won by Javier Sanz's Red Electrica Spain.
After winning the first event of the last day--the ninth day of the tournament--the Da Bruno Marbella Team crew managed to further increase the gap to second place but still needed the final round to become the winner. As if it weren't exciting enough, the Andalusian boat grazed the ninth boat in the final which also would have won were it not for this bad result and qualified fourth by a hair near Daniel de La Pedraja's ONO Tressis amd the Jose Maria Torcida's Noticia Oxital. "The Massimo (the Jeniale Eurosystem boat) cut us out and we had to change our strategy rather than go for a victory, which was our goal, and devote ourselves to controlling our rivals. That's why the three of us were so close during the event. "
Alongside the winner of the 35th Copa del Rey Mapfre on the podium was the ONO Tressis, which held second place thanks to a 2nd in the ninth round, Javier Chacartegui's HM Hotels which took third by two points, and the winner of the real-time final event. Orbaneja's boat led by Canary Island native Javier Padron, enjoyed its first victory in Balearic waters with an eight-point lead on the second-place boat. Along with Orbaneja and Padron, Canary Island native Alberto Padron's tactics, Cantabrian Jon Larrazabal and the youngest yachtsman at this year's Cup, 9-year-old Cambril native Joan Fargas, are responsible for this year's victory.
The Da Bruno Marbella Team now has a total of six firts places, one second place, one third and a ninth in the final. The Andalusian boat almost won the overall championship among the fleet of monotypes (X35, J/80 and Swan 45) had it not been for the final event.
This victory comes after five years during which Marbella has been correlatively scoring from 5th to 1st. This success has risen to the record books that include the 2015 Spanish championship, a victory at the 43rd Trofeo Conde de Godo and fourth place in the World Championship this year, besides the champion title for five consecutive years at the Sotogrande winter circuit.
The Marbella natives were happy and satisfied with their work, and it was rewarded. The entire crew was congratulated at the ceremony for their quality and dedication to winning.
What's more, the Red Eléctrica de España, Norauto, and Early Bird were proclaimed winners in the Air Europa X-35, GC 32 and MRW Swan 45 classes respectively.
